WAN – WAN…..( Women and Negativity)

The recent episode in India between two UP politician women reeks of negativity….irresponsibility and vindictiveness …

Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress party chief in the state of Uttar Pradesh, has been detained for 14 days after making a speech in which she criticized the “paltry” compensation offered to rape victims and suggested they should shame Mayawati UP Chief Minister) by offering her more money if she were herself raped.

“I say one should throw this money in Maya’s face and tell her ‘If you get raped, I’ll give you one crore’ [£125,000],” Joshi told an audience in Moradabad.

Mayawati denounced the remarks as “unpardonable” and her supporters claimed they  (These words) amounted to incitement to rape the UP chief minister. Joshi, however, insisted her comments were being taken out of context.

“I regret what I said in a fit of anger. If it is being misconstrued, if it’s being misinterpreted, it is being taken out of context, then I regret it,” she said. “I am myself a woman and I should not have spoken these words.” (http://www.intro2u.net/new/2009/07/what-did-rita-bahuguna-joshi-say/)

“My intention was to remind Mayawati that being a woman she should realise that a paltry monetary compensation cannot make up for what a woman loses on account of rape,” she added.

All that there is….in this sad episode….is an outburst ( though unwarranted…. But the angst behind the outburst need also to be considered)…
….but the irony is ….

Rita has been charged under the Scheduled caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, for allegedly making derogatory remarks against UP Chief Minister  Mayawati.

Prevention of atrocities ????? It seems slightly far-fetched …to say the least!

The bottom line is…

Abusive language and  irresponsible tone ….in public domain ….is absolutely undesirable…..and equally undesirable is such  vindictiveness !!!
