Art is what does something in your very inside ?

Right ?

Wrong !

Art is what sells….and good art is that appreciates over the years !

There are art lovers ! But they are far out-numbered by art collectors !

But the moot question is:

‘Are the collectors of art actually art lovers ?”

Please have a look at the Global  Art Business….and its magnitude:

The global fine art market grew 52 percent to $6.4 billion in 2006.

In 2006, 810 works sold for over $1 million compared with 487 in 2005. It said while the number of total auctions at 9,200 was down from 9,600 in 2005 the volume of works on offer rose along with prices - with demand strongest at the very high end. "The price index for works bought for under $10,000 grew only 8 percent in 2006...For works above the $10,000 threshold, the 2006 growth rate was 33 percent

Ten most expensive art sales :
• $140 million for No. 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock (2006)
• $137.5 million for Woman III by Willem de Kooning (2006)
• $135 million for Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt (2006)
• $104 million for Boy with a Pipe by Pablo Picasso (2004)
• $95.2 million for Dora Maar with Cat by Pablo Picasso (2006)
• $82.5 million for Portrait du Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh (1990)
• $78.1 million for Au Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1990)
• $76.7 million for The Massacre of the Innocents by Paul Rubens (2002)
• $71.5 million for Portrait de L'Artiste sans Barbe by Vincent van Gogh (1998)
• $60.5 million for Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier by Paul Cézanne (1999)

What do artists think…..

Leo Tolstoy has this to say about art:

“Every work of art causes the receiver to enter into a certain kind of relationship both with him who produced, or is producing, the art, and with all those who, simultaneously, previously, or subsequently, receive the same artistic impression.”

….and this is what Pablo Picasso said:

“Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don’t start measuring her limbs.”

It is not hard to understand modern art: If it hangs on the wall, it's as painting; if you can walk around it, it's a scupture.--unknown

Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.
Andy Warhol

Then there is a concept called Art Appreciation !

Here is an excerpt from the internet on the subject of art appreciation:

“So, for those who are uncertain about how to view a painting the answer is really very simple, just look. See. Observe. It is not necessary for you to try to figure out and understand what the artist is trying to say. All you have to do is watch. If the painting is to your taste you will enjoy this watching, and you can continue to watch as long as your interest holds out, as long as you enjoy the experience of watching this painting. If the painting evokes only repulsion/disdain/dislike, even then stay and watch and try to identify what it is that is evoking the repulsion/disdain/dislike. The painting is an invitation for you to meet yourself, to take a journey into yourself - of self-understanding. As you enjoy the experience of this self-awareness, you are well on your way to appreciating art.”

But……If you look beneath the veneer….it is actually the ‘art’ of speculating about art !

“We are no longer collecting art, we are buying individuals.”
Rene Ricard
