David M. Ogilvy, founder, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising…and considered by many as the father of modern advertising... has this to say:
”In the modern world of business it is useless to be a creative original thinker unless you can also sell what you create. Management cannot be expected to recognize a good idea unless it is presented to them by a good salesman.”
These may sound harsh words and sometimes can be proven to be grossly incorrect….if taken out of context….but the fact remains that they highlight a definite mind-set of corporate decision makers.
But then why is there so much hype about creativity….creative thinking….and creativity workshops!!!
It can only be left for the corporate decision makers to answer that !
What we are going to put across is a point of view…that might put the need for creativity workshops in a certain perspective:
Creativity workshops or Out of box thinking workshops can do the following:
Make participants who are all bottled up….into ‘relaxed’ and open individuals.
Empower them into gaining a higher self-belief.
Making them more receptive to the right brain orientation….motivating them to think in a non-linear manner.
And That is All !!!
But….What corporate HRD wants… are ‘ tangible deliverables’….and that is a grave mistake…..And that is why the whole business of creativity….and creativity workshops is fraught with doubts !
And that is how most 'salesmen' pass the test and are labeled Creativity Trainers !!!
